How is a country viewed and characterized through the eyes of a political cartoonist? For the first time, a selection of leading cartoonists from Turkey, the Netherlands, Germany and Switzerland are jointly presenting their work under the title 'Caricaturca 2010. Global-Local'. With more than 170 selected cartoons, the various cultural aspects and contexts are presented in one coherent exhibition.
The items in this exhibition focus on many themes but have at least one thing in common: they often hold a mirror up to the viewer. A mirror which may create an image that is much sharper and more merciless than one might assume when initially viewing the cartoon. Drawings such as those in 'Caricaturca' show that images can be excellent vehicles for thoughts and ideas. Illustrations of the current state of a country, more direct than any written commentary can be. And it is precisely such images that have led to strife in recent years, as reflected in the 'cartoon war' of 2006, an almost ironic term for the controversy that continues to the present day. This despite the fact that images have the inherent potential to transcend - at the international level - such debate.
The drawings by internationally renowned cartoonists such as Klaus Stuttmann, Jos Collignon, Peter Schrank and Güneri İçoğlu show that each and every theme can be examined, with humour and sometimes with a degree of cynicism. The political cartoon has the power, by means of humour, to bring some breathing space and sense of perspective to politically important issues and at the same time to offer an interpretation.
The main focus of the exhibition is the general view that the various cartoonists take of several key issues, such as freedom of the press, religion, integration and war and peace. The approaches to these subjects reveal many nuances, while cultural stereotypes within the cartoonists' own societies are ridiculed. The viewer of 'Caricaturca 2010. Global-Local' is thus in a position to compare the various types of Comic Art.
