"Know Thyself" was the leitmotif on which Plato's illustrious Academy was founded. No command -- since it forces upon us the inevitable question "Who are you?" or "Qui es-tu?"- has intrigued humankind more.
Academia: Qui es-tu? forms the second part of a trilogy which started with Artempo in Venice in 2007.
Time and Space constitute the canvasses on which all human activities, past, present and future occur. The exhibition Artempo was an intriguing interrogation on those themes, and in particular on Time as a destructor and producer of art.
Academia: Qui es-tu, on the other hand, examines the dynamical process of artistic creation. The site of the Chapelle de l'Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris is indeed the ideal venue to examine the interplay between inherited academic knowledge accumulated over centuries, education, and the subsequent transformation and transmission of that knowledge into a novel artistic creation; for short the cross-fertilization between art and knowledge.
It is to the emotionally charged experiences of a thousand generations of our ancestors that we must look in order to discover the sources of aesthetic pleasure in art, poetry, in music, in mathematics, and in other artistic forms. H.E. Huntley
