The Pearlies is the first full length study of a remarkable social phenomenon with grew out of the bustling and violent street-life of London's East End over the last three hundred years.
It is primarily the story of the costers, the street-traders, who, against a background of squalor and poverty, retained their pride and identity to develop customs and traditions uniquely their own.
The flowering of the costers'way of life came in the late 19th century when a contemporary fashion for decorating clothes with rows of bright buttons was taken up by Henry Croft, a diminutive St.Pancras roadsweeper, who 'smothered' a whole suit with beautiful and dazzling patterns composed entirely of pearl buttons.
The custom spread rapidly and soon every area in central London could boast its own Pearly King and Queen.
The Pearlies became a focal point in working-class life, a figurehead for the poor's concern with murual aid and improvement. The chief purpose of the King and Queen, together with their helpers, was to raise money for charity.
