Ninham Shand, one of the first civil engineering graduates from the University of Cape Town, began his carreer as a consulting engineer in 1932. Within a short while he established a reputation based on sound engineering principles, innovation, and above all, integrity. After World War II the firm expanded, and he and his colleagues were responsible for many of the major dams, bridges, highways and other civil engineering works in South Africa. His reputation led to him being invited to investigate options for supplying water to South Africa from the rivers of Lesotho, and his proposals eventually led to the construction of the giant Lesotho Highlands water project.
This is the story of his career, his firm and its projects, and of his colleagues and their successors who continued to excel after his premature death in 1969.
