Echter als de (retro) harde schijf of aangesloten hardware geen hogere Ultra ATA DMA standaarden ondersteund dan is een 40-polige IDE voor legacy retro opstelling voldoende.
The 80-Conductor Cable: is for Ultra DMA modes over 2 and then an 80-conductor cable must be used. If an 80-conductor cable is not detected by the system, 66 MB/s or 100 MB/s operation will be disabled. A Ultra DMA 80-conductor is not mandatory. However to achieve optimal results and be able to write up to the maximum speed, it is required.

-De Floppy Disk Drive FDD interface data kabel is ook een IDE kabel maar vraagt een kleinere 34-pin kabel en bevat connectors voor 5.25 inch or 3.5 inch FDD (Drive "A") drives. Voor floppy disk drives zijn deze snelle IDE ATA kabels niet geschikt.

-Harde schijf ondersteuning: moet zelf ook ultra DMA ondersteunen. Bovendien moet de juiste ultra DMA-modus worden ingeschakeld in de BIOS.

-80 aderige kabel: voor ultra DMA-modi hoger dan 2 moet een 80-aderige kabel worden gebruikt. Als een 80-aderige kabel niet wordt gedetecteerd door het systeem, zal automatisch 66 MB/s-, 100 MB/s- of 133 MB/s-gebruik worden uitgeschakeld.
BIOS- en OS-ondersteuning: de BIOS en/of het besturingssysteem moet ondersteuning bieden voor de ultra DMA-transfers. Verder moet de harde schijf worden ingesteld om te werken in ultra DMA-modus in het besturingssysteem. Vanaf Windows 98 gebeurt dit automatisch.
Controllerondersteuning: een controller die ultra DMA-overdrachten ondersteunt. Dit kan zowel de onboard-controller zijn op het moederbord als een IDE/ATA-interface (add-on-)kaart.

IDE (=Integrated Drive Electronics/Intelligent Drive Electronics) A hardware interface for hard drives and CD/DVD drives.
