SAS AND SATA COMPATIBLE
The Z840 has an 8-port LSI SAS controller built into the motherboard, and all 4 drive bays are cabled to it. That controller works with both SAS and SATA drives, so every bay accepts SAS server drives as well as ordinary SATA hard drives and SSDs – mix and match as you like (the SSD in this machine is SATA, the hard drives are SAS, all running side by side). There are also separate Intel SATA controllers on the board.

ROOM FOR 4 MORE DRIVES
All 4 internal 3.5" bays are in use (3 SAS drives + the SSD), but only 4 of the 8 SAS ports are used. The other 4 ports are free, on a second mini-SAS (SFF-8087) connector on the motherboard. To add up to 4 more drives:
- Inside the case: fit a drive cage in the two 5.25" front bays – a "3-in-2" cage gives three more 3.5" drives, or a 4x 2.5" cage takes four 2.5" SSDs/drives. Connect it to the free connector with an SFF-8087 to 4x SATA breakout cable (about 10-15 euro). Choose a cage rated for SAS/SATA if you want to use SAS drives. Power comes from the PSU.
- Outside the case: an SFF-8087 to SFF-8088 slot bracket (about 15 euro) brings the port out the back for an external SAS drive enclosure.

TESTED
Checked on this machine before listing (screenshots in the photos):
- 10 minutes at 100% on all 48 threads plus a memory stress test – passed, zero failures
- Zero ECC memory errors
- CPU temperatures max 63 °C under full load – the cooling is excellent and it stays quiet
- All CPUs, memory and the SAS controller detected correctly
- All 3 SAS hard drives: health OK, zero bad sectors, zero errors, full-surface self-test completed with no errors
- SSD: health PASSED, 100% life remaining, zero errors

WINDOWS 11 – PLEASE READ
Windows 11 Pro is installed and activated with the genuine OEM Pro licence stored in the BIOS (Windows Pro licence sticker on the rear).
Honest note: the Xeon E5 v3 CPU is not on Microsoft's official Windows 11 list, so it was installed with the hardware check skipped. It runs normally and security updates install as usual (verified September 2026). This Windows 11 version (25H2) receives security updates until October 2027; newer versions after that need a manual upgrade because Microsoft does not offer them automatically on this CPU. Many buyers of this machine use Linux or Proxmox instead – it is also an excellent home server.

GOOD FOR
Virtualisation (Proxmox, VMware, Hyper-V – VT-x/VT-d enabled), home server / NAS, CAD, rendering, video work, software development, running many containers.

TIP FOR MORE SPEED
Each CPU currently has one memory module. Adding modules in matched sets (4 per CPU) unlocks full quad-channel memory bandwidth. Compatible DDR4 ECC RDIMMs are widely available.

- Used, fully working and tested. Normal signs of use: some light scuffs and marks on the side panels – see photos.
- Collection in Overpelt (Belgium) – it is a large, heavy tower. You are welcome to see it running before you pay.
