Offered is an original "Apple Studio Display 21-inch (Model M4868) from 1999" — a rare and increasingly hard-to-find large-format CRT monitor from Apple’s late-90s design renaissance.
This impressive 21-inch CRT display was part of the same design generation as the legendary Blue & White Power Mac G3, marking a pivotal moment in Apple’s transition toward the modern design language that would define the 2000s.
The monitor is in working condition.
Historical Context
Released in 1999, this model accompanied the Blue & White G3 systems and was aimed at creative professionals who required high-resolution color accuracy and large screen real estate. At the time, it was considered a premium display for graphic designers, publishers, and multimedia professionals.
I personally used this monitor in 2000 in a professional graphic design environment. It formed part of a period-correct setup typical for design studios at the turn of the millennium. For illustration purposes, one of the photos shows the display in a time-accurate setup with a Blue & White G3, keyboard and mouse.
Please note: ONLY the 21-inch Studio Display is included in this lot. The G3 B&W computer, keyboard and mouse are shown purely for contextual illustration and are NOT part of the auction.
Usage Context
While the iMac of the era was aimed at everyday users and home computing, this 21-inch Apple Studio Display was designed for professional “power users.” Creative professionals — such as graphic designers, advertising agencies, music studios, and architects — relied on the Blue & White G3 tower paired with this large CRT display for their demanding work.
This monitor offered superior color accuracy, high-resolution output, and large screen real estate — essential tools for professional workflows at the turn of the millennium. It represents a key piece of Apple’s late-90s professional computing heritage.
Condition
The display is in good overall working condition, especially considering its age.
There are normal signs of use consistent with a professional monitor from 1999, including light surface scratches, small marks and minor signs of wear on the housing. These are purely cosmetic and typical for a CRT display that was used in a studio environment.
As known among collectors, the translucent plastics used in the late-1990s Apple G3 design generation are prone to developing small hairline cracks over time. This is also the case for this monitor. Please carefully review the detailed photos provided, where these minor cracks are clearly visible. They are typical age-related characteristics of this series.
In addition, the anti-glare / protective coating on the screen itself is beginning to show signs of lifting in certain areas. This is a known and common phenomenon with vintage CRT displays of this era. It does not prevent the monitor from functioning, but potential buyers should be aware of this age-related cosmetic condition.
Buyers are also advised to ensure that their Macintosh system is equipped with the correct and compatible video card for this specific 21-inch Studio Display model. Compatibility and technical setup are the sole responsibility of the buyer. Please conduct your own research prior to bidding.
This is a 1999 professional CRT display — not a modern monitor — and should be purchased with appropriate expectations regarding vintage technology.
