Er zijn verschillende legendes waar het Deck of Many Things vandaan komt, maar niemand weet het zeker. Wat zeker is, is dat de spelers goed na moeten denken voordat ze een kaart trekken; de gevolgen kunnen ver reikend zijn, zowel positief als negatief.

• Istus and Asteria: Another version says Istus created the deck after a deal with a human named Asteria to save her friend, a medusa named Euryale.
• Ancient Archfey: Some historians believe the deck was a gift from an ancient archfey to an emperor, though this is not the most widely accepted story.
