I have been looking for this bass for several Years now. This is a fantastic Gretsch bass with almost all the Gretsch bells and whistles. Great TV Jones Thundertron pickups, excellent craftsmanship from Korea and plays like a dream. The only thing I changed was the bridge, putting on a Gretsch Space Control Bridge. More Gretsch like in appearance and does great intonation. The bass feels good in the hands, plays easily with a deep bold growl or soft overtones. With flat wound strings you can get a really close upright bass sound. The finish is flawless and beautiful Gretsch reddish orange. Craftsmanship is superb with great attention to detail and no sloppy work anywhere. frets are nicely rounded with a quick action and beautiful tight grain rosewood fretboard . This is a life time keeper, you can cover every style of playing with this one bass. I had a White Falcon Bass at one time and I prefer this one because of the body size and shape that sits easier in the lap sitting down and hangs better for me standing. Gretsch almost universally adopted “Neo-Classic” inlays – also
called “thumbnail” or “half-moon” inlays – in 1958. They are indeed half-moon..The 5123 doesn’t have as much bling as the 5442 but has better pups with a bigger body which I believe produces a deeper tone than the 5442.
