Roland has tapped into a market for compact synthesizers with relatively large specifications. For example, you may remember the Gaia; the Roland JD-Xi analog/digital crossover synthesizer appeals to exactly that target group. The JD-Xi can definitely be called compact; with 37 mini-keys in an already modest housing, this synth is at least easy to transport. That is perhaps also the application that appeals to the imagination the most, both the operation and the sonic concept scream 'live'. In this respect, the JD-Xi really has something to offer, how about a polyphony of 129?
Sound of the JD-Xi"129" you ask? Exactly, this device has four parts. Two digital parts (ROM samples), a drum part (also ROM samples) and a monophonic analog part. Simple calculations show that the digital part is 128-voice. Since the samples are quite general (wind instruments, strings, pads, keyboard instruments and the like) you can create nice sound carpets with which there is actually no question of note-stealing. Roland has also thought of effects, an integral part of every sound. These are common effects such as delay, reverb, flanger, distortion and the like.


Further propertiesFor the analogue part you can choose from sawtooth, triangle or block (with adjustable pulse width). The synthesis section is simple but effective; most keyboard players in a band do not have time for a synthesis model with 100 parameters. An x0x-style step sequencer is also present, as well as an arpeggiator. A little bit of yourself, and a little bit of Roland; this motto applies to the microphone input. With the supplied gooseneck mic you can control the vocoder with your voice. Nice for robot voices, but also useful for AutoPitch and AutoNote.
