Dit Byzantijnse bronzen kruis is een hanger uit ca. 11e–13e eeuw met emaille inleg en een geïntegreerde ophanglus; beide zijden zijn versierd, met patina en restanten van de oorspronkelijke polychrome emaille.

Condition: Intact suspension loop. Patinated surface with corrosion and earthen deposits. Traces of original enamel still visible within the recessed cells.

A cast bronze devotional cross pendant with integral suspension loop. Each of the four arms terminates in rounded ends, decorated with recessed circular cells, still preserving traces of the original polychrome enamel. A raised circular boss sits at the center, emphasizing the cross form. Both sides are decorated.

The surviving enamel, though partly lost, highlights the vibrant decorative scheme that once covered the pendant. Such inlays were not merely ornamental but carried symbolic significance, reflecting light and color as a manifestation of divine radiance.

Cultural and Historical Context:
Enamelled cross pendants of this type are typical of Byzantine religious art between the 11th and 13th centuries AD, and were worn as personal devotional objects and protective amulets. They are found across the Byzantine Empire and neighboring Christian lands, testifying to the wide cultural reach of Byzantine craftsmanship and faith.
