One of the lesser known tool watches in the Rolex catalogue, the Milgauss was released in 1956. Designed as a precision timepiece for scientists working in strong magnetic fields, the specially made case protects the movement from magnetism up to 1000 gauss.

Magnetism is hugely damaging to mechanical watches. A strong magnetic field interferes with the regularity of the hairspring, affecting timekeeping and with repeated exposure can cause permanent damage to the movement. The Milguass solves this issue by encasing the movement in an ferromagnetic alloy shield which protects it from strong magnetic fields allowing the watch to keep accurate time

Early designs of the Milgauss were based on the Submariner and featured a rotating bezel and signature lightning bolt second hand. The Milgauss stayed in production and due to low interest in the series, was discontinued in 1988. The model returned in 2007 with an all-new design, three dial colours and all the technical advancements made in its 20 year absence.

Despite its niche target audience and a 20 year hiatus, the Milgauss has a cult following amongst Rolex collectors. Vintage references regularly fetch upwards of €20,000 and the modern Milgauss has been seen on the wrists of public figures such as Eric Clapton, Jennifer Aniston and Tom Hanks. Whilst it may never be one of the iconic Rolex models, the Milgauss is a cool, under-the-radar alternative to the usual suspects and is sure to get you a nod of appreciation from fellow collectors.
