It is fair to say that Rolex has been known for its mechanical craftsmanship for decades. Anyone with the slightest interest in watches is familiar with quartz timepieces, about which opinions often differ. However, it is interesting to know that Rolex has also produced quartz watches, the so-called Oysterquartz. These are perhaps the most overdeveloped watches ever with a great design! Rolex produced the Oysterquartz for no less than 25 years. The last year the Rolex Oysterquartz appeared in the catalogue was 2001/2002.

Let's go back to the 1950s, when Rolex was already researching electronic timekeeping. This was well before the Quartz crisis which occurred in the 1970s. From 1952, Rolex obtained its official patent for electromechanical watch designs. In 1970, Rolex's first Quartz watch was introduced, the Rolex Quartz Date 5100. There were 1,000 pieces produced before Rolex started developing its own Quartz timepieces. In 1977, Rolex introduced its own Quartz movement, the 5035 which was used for the Datejust Oysterquartz and the 5055 which was used for the Day-Date Oysterquartz models. We should certainly not forget the high finishing standards of these movements either. The most striking feature are the so-called ''Geneva stripes'' which are normally found only on high-end mechanical movements. No other Quartz movement is comparable in terms of finishing!

The beautiful example we have here dates back to 1984. This Datejust Oysterquartz is truly in magnificent condition, we rarely come across them like this! Many watch lovers compare the design of the Oysterquartz to the Royal Oak design by the famous designer Gerald Genta. The case, and the 17010 bracelet which shows no stretch at all, together with the white gold fluted bezel are razor-sharp. A true eye-catcher when these together create an amazing sparkle through the reflection of light! The silver sunburst dial is slightly discoloured to a beige hue. In addition, the tritium dots that are still fully intact are nicely discoloured to a brown/orange pumpkin hue along with the hands. Also, a part of the original green case back sticker is still present. The watch has a new battery and the movement has been fully checked by our watchmaker. All engravings on the back of the watch and on the bracelet are still fully readable. Unfortunately, it often happens that these are no longer readable after a few years, because the watch and bracelet have been polished too often or not properly. This is because the engravings on the Oysterquartz are not on the inside of the watch. This beautiful 1984 Rolex Datejust Oysterquartz comes with a 1-year warranty from 10 over 10.

Datejust

In the year 1945, the first Datejust was introduced to commemorate Rolex's 40th anniversary under the reference 4467. This was the first self-winding watch with a waterproof case that also displayed the date and automatically changed it at midnight. The Datejust was equipped with the fluted bezel and the renowned Jubilee bracelet, which was specially designed for the Datejust. The date was indicated at the 3 o'clock position. Ten years later, in 1955, the date window was fitted with a Cyclops lens, magnifying the date up to 2.5 times.

Most iconic Rolex models were produced as tool watches. However, the Datejust had no specific purpose. This model was meant to be a classic, reliable, and versatile watch suitable for any occasion in daily life.

Winding and setting the watch is incredibly easy to do: simply unscrew the crown from the case and turn clockwise to wind the movement. Pulling the crown out one click and turning will set the date and a second click to set the time. Once all three have been done, press the crown in, screw back into the case and put the watch on your wrist and let the self winding movement keep the power topped up whilst you wear it.
