The spec’d up bigger brother of the Burton Custom features much of the same great tech as the original, but if you feel the need for speed then the Burton Custom X snowboard is worth the extra cash.
Both the core and the fibreglass are lighter than what you’ll find in the Custom, but with no loss of strength. The additional carbon found in the latter further increases the response of the Custom X too.

Of course, that’s only a good thing if it suits your style of riding – but advanced riders who like to push their riding at all times will love it. The rapid sintered base will carry you as fast as you dare, while the protruding sections of edge near the contact points ensure you’ll never wash out of a carve.

You don’t have to be a speed demon to enjoy this; just watch the Laax Open to see how many pipe riders use the Custom X. It’s also what Red Gerard rode to his surprise slopestyle victory at the 2018 Winter Olympics. Basically, freestyle is very much on the cards, but you need to be confident.

This board is no spring chicken, and funnily enough neither are most of the people that you see riding it regularly on the mountain.

If you’ve outgrown the park, but not yet committed to the backcountry, the Custom X is a fine choice. When turned up to 11 on groomers, it’s capable of delivering a jolt of adrenalin that’s not a million miles away from dropping a cliff.

You always feel stable and in control on the Custom X, even when it’s insanely slick underfoot. At the same time it really is light, and not without personality. Popping off a roller on this, for example, is bonkers good.
