Beschrijving
Twee mooi gebonden banden van Johann Strauss bevatten piano en viool dansen uit het negentiendeeeuwse Wenen, voorzien van antwerps bindwerk.
A handsome pair of large albums bringing together original editions of Johann Strauss’s waltzes, polkas and cotillons for piano and for violin with piano accompaniment.
One title shown in the photos:
“Walzer und Cotillons für Violine und Piano-Forte von Joh. Strauss, No. 50” (publisher’s imprint: “Wien, bei Tobias Haslinger, k.k. Hof- u. priv. Kunst- u. Musikalienhändler, Graben N° 572”).
Another: “Juristen-Ball-Polka (schnell) von Johann Strauss, Op. 280” for piano and for violin.
The volumes clearly contain a substantial selection of Strauss dance music issued by leading Viennese publishers of the period (Haslinger, etc.), bound together for private use. Ideal both as a decorative item and as a period performance source.
Binding
Two uniform luxury bindings:
dark blue half-morocco over marbled boards,
spines with raised bands, gilt titles “Johann Strauss – Danses – Piano 4” and “Johann Strauss – Danses – Violon 4”,
gilt tools (sunburst with lyre) and owner’s name “Frederic Du Chene” at the foot,
striking marbled endpapers with the small printed binder’s ticket:
“Reliure Hippolyte Gyseninx, 13, Marché aux Œufs, Anvers.”
A good Belgian presentation binding on Viennese music.
Contents
2 volumes (Piano / Violin), large 4to.
Numerous individual pieces by Johann Strauss bound together; the exact number of works has not been fully collated.
Music printed throughout; titles and first pages reproduced in the photos give a good impression of the whole.
Condition
Bindings solid; light rubbing to joints and corners, slight fading and small scuffs to spines.
Inner hinges sound.
Paper with some scattered foxing and light browning, mainly to margins and first/last leaves; the music pages themselves are generally clean and sharp.
No loose gatherings observed; normal signs of age and use.
A decorative and very presentable pair of Strauss dance albums in attractive 19th-century Antwerp bindings, combining Viennese musical history with fine bookbinding.
