Splendid 16th century large folio-size bible in latin
This magnificent folio Bible from Plantin’s press is its most impressive production besides the world famous Polyglot Bible. Its exuberant illustration with splendid engravings is the work of the foremost Dutch and Flemish engravers, out of well over 90 engravings 36 of the plates were designed by P. van der Borcht. Its typographic design , printing quality and the abundant engravings makes this book an unheard-of treasure.

"One of the most impressive and beautiful editions of the Plantin press" (Voet). A reprint of the Bible of Louvain (1547) Plantin first issued his edition in 1565, again in 1574, before this edition of 1583, for which 36 illustrations were specially cut to enhance those taken from earlier publications.

This copy includes the dedication to Cardinal Albert of Austria, which is sometimes missing because Antwerp was at that time under a Calvinist administration (perhaps explaining the partial erasures to female body parts on the title-page).

This large 0ver 40 cms folio-Bible was realized with the financial help of the Spanish King at a moment when Plantin was considered by many to be a follower of the rebels, and in any way lived in rebel-held country and printed many ordinances and decrees decrying Philip II and his partisans. Already in 1580 Plantin started working on this Bible. On 1 July he wrote to Arias Montanus that he was ready to start the printing of this bible. Some months later, he could send his friend sheets of the Notationes in Sacra Biblia of F. Lucas intended to accompany the great Bible. However, it was only achieved in the first months of 1583.

Het complete boekwerk inclusief de originele wereldkaart van Montano is recent elders verkocht door Sanderus Maps in Gent met een vraagprijs van 17.000 euro
Op dit moment wordt nergens meer ter wereld een compleet exemplaar aangeboden.
