The first and best book of Francis Edward Smedley (1818 – 1864) based on the author’s few months as one of the private pupils of the Rev Charles Millett at Brighton, Sussex.

The book was popular and its early chapters are still fresh and funny with stories of paractical jokes and teasing.

The bookplate on the verso of the front cover (scan 3) indicates that this copy once belonged into the library of Castle Madoc, one of the most beautiful country houses in Wales. Built in 1540 by the Powell Family
