Rare copy of the first Dutch edition. Fine copy. The work is especially of great importance because it is the very first source to show a profile view of a pyramid. Gay 2105; cf. Blackmer 1061 (ed. Paris, 1735). Benoit de Maillet was French consul in Egypt from 1692 to 1708. "In his retirement he decided to publish his memoirs, material which he had collected during his long sojourn in Egypt. (...) Maillet had developed a passionate interest in Arabic, and in Egyptian antiquities, as well as in the contemporary life of the country; he was one of the earliest writers to interest himself in the Arabic architecture of Egypt" (Blackmer).
