Important ouvrage sur la prostitution à Paris dans la première moitié du XIXème siècle par un ancien commissaire de police chargé du bureau de ce service.

Si Parent-Duchatelet traite le sujet sous le point de vue higiènique et sanitaire, Béraud s’appuie sur des faits dont il a été le témoin: tableau de la prostitution, avec tous ses accidents, réglemens et ordonnances auxquels elle est soumise.
I’insuffisance de ces réglemens et ordonnances, relativement à la prostitution clandestine. Projet des mesures nouvelles d’organisation de la prostitution, dans le plus grand intérêt possible de la santé et de la morale publique.

Précédé d’une Notice historique par Albert Montémont de 108 pages: précis historique sur la prostitution chez les divers peuples de la terre, depuis la création du monde jusquà nos jours.

As head of what would be now considered the vice squad now, in the Paris police for many years, Béraud was interested in controlling prostitution, especially that practiced openly in the streets. He saw prostitution as necessary but in need of regulation.
He describes the practice of prostitution in Paris in extensive, clear, forthright, often nonjudgmental, terms; and he had considerable sympathy for the female victims within the system and their families.

This book proposes specific reforms and punishments, buttressed with examples of law and cases drawn from his own experience.
References are made to the important study by Parent-Duchatelet (published in 1836.)
According to the editors preface Béraud was a primary source for this earlier study, both in interviews and by permitting access to police files.
But Béraud clearly saw the need for this book to deal with moral, human and police issues (which he knew firsthand), and to make clarifications and corrections to the earlier work. Béraud notes that he disagrees with Parent-Duchatelet on at least one point during their extensive interviews: the use of tread-mills in prisons for prostitutes, with Parent-Duchatelet favoring this practice and Béraud strongly opposing it.

This is the first edition of a scarce book.
There was another French edition published in Brussels 1839 and an English translation in 1849. (The title of the english version gives a very different first impression of this book: The public women of Paris: being an account of the causes of their depravation, their several classes, their means and ways of living, their arts, habits, and practices: from the notes of a savant, and the records of a commissary of police.
