SIR NAPIER SHAW begins this book with a prologue on “Pageantry in the Sky”, in which a vivid idea is given of the beauty and wonder of the pictures formed by clouds. The pairs of stereoscopic pictures are particularly to be commended in that the distance separating them is small enough to permit of their enjoyment without the need of optical equipment.
Sir Napier Shaw was formerly director of the Meteorological Office in England, so when he writes |of "The Drama of Weather" (Cambridge University Press), he writes as one having authority; and, in addition, he is a delightful writer. Al though the subject is a weighty one, Sir Napier Shaw discusses it lightly and brightly, making it not merely readable but entertaining. The book is beautifully Illustrated, and author, artist, and publisher have provided readers with a book that is full of human interest. There is an excellent chapter on different theories about long-distance forecasting and sunspot rhythms. After discussing them and explaining them, Sir Napier suggests they are all very beautiful and very poetic, but, like the ancient Greek oracles or the prophecies of the Sybils, "it take a much wiser man to appreciate them at their full value than it does to make them."
Sir William Napier Shaw (4 March 1854 – 23 March 1945) was a British meteorologist.
He introduced the tephigram, a diagram for evaluating convective instability in the atmosphere. He also served as president of the International Meteorological Committee and Royal Meteorological Society.
