Detailed Description
This flower vessel was crafted by "Gyokujudo" during Japan's Taisho or Showa period. Its design mimics a wooden water-drawing bucket; it was originally commissioned to commemorate a wedding anniversary and comes with its complete, original paulownia wood box.
The body of the vessel resembles a bamboo segment, cast with two raised bamboo-node motifs. It features straight walls that taper slightly—narrower at the top and wider at the base—with a wide U-shaped cutout at the rim. Upright posts on both sides support a movable handle designed to look like a bamboo stalk; the joints rotate flexibly, showcasing a realistic and intricate biomimetic design.
Over time, the bronze surface has developed a rich, natural, and mottled patina. A reddish-brown base tone intertwines with blue-green verdigris, creating a substantial, antique texture. The interior is hollow, allowing for direct flower arrangement, making it a highly practical vessel for *Ikebana* (Japanese flower arranging).
It includes the original rectangular paulownia wood storage box. The exterior bears the inscription "Bronze Flower Vase," while the inside of the lid features a calligraphic inscription detailing the wedding anniversary, names of the parties involved, and the "Gyokujudo" workshop mark. A yellow *fukusa* (ceremonial cloth) is included inside to protect the vessel. This is a well-preserved, custom-made wedding commemorative piece; it is free of dents, cracks, or repairs, and the surface patina is entirely the result of natural aging.
