Handgeschilderde Meri Khorlo Thangka uit Nepal

Deze bijzondere thangka heb ik destijds gekocht in een klooster in Nepal. Het schilderij is volledig met de hand gemaakt, geschilderd met mineraalverf en omlijst met zijde.

De thangka is een zogenoemde Meri Khorlo (letterlijk “vuurberg” of “berg van transformatie”), een traditioneel Tibetaans-Boeddhistisch motief dat het Dharmachakra – het Wiel van de Dharma – symboliseert. Het toont de vijf Dhyani Boeddha’s, elk met hun eigen betekenis. Bovenaan is de Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara afgebeeld, de toekomstige Boeddha.

De afmetingen zijn:

• Totale thangka: ca. 82 cm breed x 140 cm lang
• Schildering: ca. 57 cm x 75 cm

De thangka is vermoedelijk enkele tientallen jaren oud. Hij verkeert in goede staat, met slechts kleine gebruikssporen passend bij de leeftijd.

This 140x82 cm, handmade Thangka was made in Nepal in the second half of the 20th century. A so-called Meri Khorlothangka, which means fire mountain, depicts five Dhyani Buddhas (the meditating Buddhas), each with its specific meaning. At the top is depicted the Bodhisattva (future Buddha) Avalokiteśvara. 

"Meri Khorlo" is a term that originates from Tibetan Buddhism. It is the Tibetan word for the Dharmachakra or Wheel of Dharma, which symbolizes the teachings of the Buddha. Meri effectively refers to "mountain of fire" or a "full mountain," often associated with the intense energy of transformation. Khorlo means 'wheel'. In the Buddhist context, it specifically refers to the Dharmachakra, which represents the cyclical nature of existence and the teachings of the Buddha. Together, "Meri Khorlo" can symbolize the transformative wheel of spiritual practice, emphasizing the dynamic process of awakening and enlightenment for the viewer of the Thangka.
