Maria Schuurman is sinds 1975 actief als schilderes en beeldhouwster. In 1978 werkte ze met Joop Beljon (beeldhouwer, docent, graficus, schrijver en directeur van de haagse kunstacademie) samen aan een groep plastieken, meubelstukken en tegeltableaus waarbij Beljon een basis maakte van hout die Maria Schuurman voltooide met geraffineerd boetseer en schilderwerk. Destijds speelden gezette dames en subtiele erotiek al de hoofdrol in haar werk.
Dit schreef Joop Beljon over haar:

…. and so Maria creates mysterious worlds to which a touch of Watteau or Boucher-like eroticism is not alien…

…. She observes, she makes fun –of herself too. She narrates with loving care, in a style immediately comprehensible for everybody. Her painted poems are topical in the Goethian sense: they are drawn from everyday life: a women lying in the grass, a waitress in a topless restaurant, a woman stepping out of the bath. Maria creates a new Arcady and in doing so she is continuing the tradition of Rousseau, Bombois and Grandma Moses….

…. After all of today’s movements and isms, after conceptual art and hard edge, after symbolism and
neo realism, Maria’s work is like a breath of fresh air. Very much exception in today’s world of art….

Maria illustreerde diverse boeken en maakte een cartoonstory voor het maandblad Cosmopilitain.
In 1990 maakte ze een grote murschildering in de Royal Palm Beach Club op Sint Maarten.
