This is absolutely the finest, highest quality "Sports" headband headphone that Sony ever made. A headband equipped headphone is best for maintaining driver insertion during vigorous exercise. As a runner, I found every IEM lacking in that regard. It was simply impossible to keep a proper seal in the ear canal while bouncing up and down running. Headphones with headbands always worked best.

In response, Sony produced their only top-of-the-line Sports headphone, the Sony MDR-AS100(W). The drivers are unique, but reminiscent of the Koss KDE250, which came out in the same year (2009). Both used ear canal insertion drivers, but with an additional driver portion that would remain in close proximity, but outside the ear. In the Koss version, the same driver simply inserted only partially. In this Sony headphone, there is an entirely separate driver outside of the IEM inserted tip.

The combination results in the finest sound you will experience with a truly exercise-qualified headphone. It says on the head and the drivers stay inserted in the ear canal. The modular cable makes the headphone flexible with waist or arm mounted sources, allowing for optimum cable length: either long or short.

On the market for a very short time, probably because of its singular niche as a top-of-the-line exercise headphone, this model has become as rare as the MDR-E747, MDR-80T, the MDR-R10, or the once lowly MDR-2 (thanks to Guardians of the Galaxy). The MDR-AS100 is in that category, with singularly stellar performance if you are a serious runner/fitness person looking for high-quality and dependable sound.
