For centuries, Yoshiwara was the famed pleasure center of Tokyo. An erotic world unmatched by the West was created by beautiful courtesans, geishas, dancers, actors and artists. To this "floating world" came the hedonists and the sensual pleasure hunters.
Yoshiwara was the government-sanctioned pleasure quarter of Edo (Old Tokyo), operating from 1617 until 1958. It was a self-contained, walled district known for its courtesans, teahouses, and brothels, where patrons sought sensual and cultural entertainment. While it fostered an elaborate erotic culture and influenced traditional Japanese arts, fashion, and kabuki theatre, it was also a place of exploitation and the forced sexual labor of women.
