In 1965, the collaboration of Charles P. Mountford, the ethnologist, and Ainslie Roberts, the artist, produced the extremely successful book THE DREAMTIME. That work was inspired by discussions over many years between Mountford and Roberts, in which the ethnologist narrated the Aboriginal myths collected during his research expeditions to Central and Northern Australia. This territory is well-known to Roberts, who had made many painting trips there, and as he listened to the myths he began to see them in terms of colour and design. The result was a series of paintings which were widely hailed for the sensitive imagery with which they captured the fantasies of the Aboriginal myths, and it was decided to incorporate them in a book. Mr. Mountford wrote a text which explains the background to the myths and Mr. Roberts added further illustrations in black and white. Public response was so great that Roberts was encouraged to paint three more series of pictures on the same theme all of which have been incorporated into books.

In 1965 resulteerde de samenwerking tussen Charles P. Mountford, de etnoloog, en Ainslie Roberts, de kunstenaar, in het uiterst succesvolle boek THE DREAMTIME. Dat werk werd geïnspireerd door discussies die Mountford en Roberts jarenlang voerden, waarin de etnoloog de mythen van de Aboriginals vertelde die hij had verzameld tijdens zijn onderzoeksreizen naar Centraal- en Noord-Australië. Dit gebied is goed bekend bij Roberts, die er veel schilderreizen had gemaakt, en toen hij naar de mythen luisterde, begon hij ze te zien in termen van kleur en ontwerp. Het resultaat was een serie schilderijen die alom werden geprezen vanwege de gevoelige beelden waarmee ze de fantasieën van de mythen van de Aboriginals vastlegden, en er werd besloten om ze in een boek op te nemen. De heer Mountford schreef een tekst waarin de achtergrond van de mythen werd uitgelegd en de heer Roberts voegde verdere illustraties in zwart-wit toe. De publieke respons was zo groot dat Roberts werd aangemoedigd om nog drie series schilderijen over hetzelfde thema te schilderen, die allemaal in boeken zijn opgenomen.
