Guide to the Collections of The tate Gallery
The Tate Gallery is the national collection of modern art and of British painting before 1900. This combination of function is unusual, perhaps unique, among great galleries. It offers an approach to art on the one hand through the national tradition and at the present time. Each of these is likely to colour art and the experience of art in Britain, and the Tate seeks to tell what it can about them both. This guide, originally published in 1970, is soon to be superseded by a more up-to-date publication. But although it cannot give a complete view of the Gallery's holdings, wich have greatly expanded in recent years, it nevertheless still provides a useful indication of the scope of the Collections and of the context in wich many of the works were made.
