The Utrecht Psalter is a masterpiece of Carolingian manuscript production. Rarely has the manuscript been on public display but in 1996 it formed the focus of an exhibition in Utrecht. Five lengthy essays discuss the manuscript and its context, accompanied by a catalogue of the 40 comparative items with which it was displayed. Rosamund Mckitterick discusses the historical context, Koert van der Horst introduces the manuscript itself, the text, its history, production and interpretation; Kathleen Corrigan looks at early medieval psalter illustration; Florentine Mutherich examines Carolingian illumination in Rheims and William Noel looks at its influence on English work. The catalogue which follows includes comparative manuscipts, ivories, crystals and seals with illustrations and bibliographies.
