IKIRO - Be Alive, Kröller-Müller museum 2001, toont kunst uit de afgelopen twintig jaar, van twee generaties kunstenaars. Ufan Lee, Isamu Wakabayashi, Susumu Koshimizu, Fujio Akai, Shigeo Toya, Toshihiro Kuno, Kimio Tsuchiya en Hisaya Jojima behoren tot de oudere generatie. In hun werk spelen spiritualiteit en natuurbeleving een grote rol.
Voor de jongere generatie, Tatsuo Miyajima, Rieko Hidaka, Minako Saitoh, Osamu Kanemura, Tsuyoshi Ozawa, Mariko Mori, Yoshinori Kon, Takahiro Suzuki, Shimabuku en Tabaimo, is niet de natuur maar ‘het leven’ het hoofdmotief. The book and exhibition are intended to acquaint the public with two kinds of Japanese artists: those who traditionally seek authenticity and reflect on their own identity and their relationship to nature, and those who are intensely concerned with the world they live in and with Japan's recent history.
