This book, published in 1987, contains 31 works by 25 artists from the late 19th-early 20th century and includes all the names that one would expect; less familiar artists include morisot, de la fresnaye, soutine, rouault, dufy and manzu. After a short introduction about nathan cummings the businessman and collector by david finn, the individual works, which include 7 sculptures, are presented each with a description by richard brettell, written in a very clear and lucid manner. Details about the individual works are presented in the catalogue, in alphabetical order of the artist. The reproductions are, in general, full page size and the colour photography is excellent. In almost all cases details of the work are also shown in close-ups which show individual brush strokes and, in the case of soutine and rouault, the thickness of the application. For the sculptures, the photographs show the work from all directions. The picture credits go to geoffrey clements and david finn and i have not seen many better reproductions in art books, catalogues, posters and prints.
