Mongolia's heritage of the twentieth century consists of a lost ideology and re-found freedoms. The symbols of the revolution are still in tact, but only the outside world seems to notice them. The country itself does not attach much value or significance to the revolutionary icons of yore, and there are hardly signs of retribution or iconoclasm. The new Mongolia is first and foremost a country that is trying to build a new existence on the remnants of seventy years of socialism.nBelgian photographer Jan Locus has captured the full dynamics of this heritage, reconstruction and renovation of city and steppe. His photos show the fragments of the twentieth century and the opportunities Mongolia sees for itself. the workers and townspeople, the prisoners and street children, but also the nomads and their winning horses: they all redefine the past on the eve of a new Mongolia.

De erfenis van de twintigste eeuw bestaat voor Mongolia uit een verloren ideologie en herwonnen vrijheden. De symbolen van de revolutie zijn daarbij grotendeels blijven staan, maar dat lijkt alleen de buitenwereld op te vallen. Het land zelf hecht maar weinig waarde en betekenis aan de revolutionaire iconenwereld van weleer, en van een afrekening of beeldenstorm is al helemaal geen sprake. Nieuw Mongolia toont in eerste plaats een land dat op de resten van zeventig jaar socialisme een nieuw bestaan tracht op te bouwen. Jan Locus heeft die erfenis, reconstructie en vernieuwing van stad en steppe in volle vaart weten te grijpen. Zijn foto's tonen de brokstukken van de twintigste eeuw en de kansen die Mongolia voor zich ziet. De arbeiders en stedelingen, de gevangenen en straatkinderen, maar ook de nomaden en hun winnende paarden geven betekenis aan het verleden aan de vooravond van een nieuw Mongolia.
