Karin Borghouts fotografeert vooral in de openbare ruimte, bij voorkeur architecturale omgevingen, dierentuinen, pretparken en musea. Vaak zijn het plekken die niet per se interessant zijn die ze in haar foto’s transformeert en verandert in mysterieuze constructies. Vaak zien we er een soort menselijke onmacht in uitgebeeld. De omgeving wordt tentoongesteld als een podium, kunstmatig en gecontroleerd. Karin Borghouts doorbreekt op subtiele wijze de uiterlijke schijn die door de hedendaagse samenleving in stand wordt gehouden. De natuur fungeert daarin als decor. Hoewel Karin Borghouts in documentaire stijl probeert te werken (met een grootformaat camera op statief), zijn de beelden niet zomaar opnames. Ze fungeren als grens tussen realiteit en fantasie.

Karin Borghouts photographs, place in public areas, preferably architectural environments, zoos, amusement parks and museums. It is often places that are not necessarily interesting that she transforms in her photos and changes into mysterious constructions. We often see a sort of human impotence depicted in them. The environment is exhibited as a stage, artificial and controlled. Karin Borghouts subtly breaks through the outer appearance that is being kept up by contemporary society. Nature functions in them as a decor. Although Karin Borghouts tries to work in a documentary style (with a large format camera on a tripod), the images are not just recordings. They act as a border between reality and phantasy.
