Changing Status - Hazel Hucker / 9780316646826
A novel of changes - of life, of love, of ambition and understanding.
For centuries Brambourne Manor was a family home, it has now been divided into flats, suitable for those on suddenly down-sized incomes, for seekers of new lives. So it appears to Alex Lindridge, a courts administrator forced out early from his work; to Martin Upcott, an ex-Army officer, writhing under the same scourge, and to Dr Margaret Jessop, trying to bury painful memories of a family break-up. Only Judge Thorne has moved there for positive reasons, his love of country pursuits.
With these people come families of different ages and differing talents, their lives abruptly overturned. When Betty Upcott determines to develop the manor gardens, mortifying her husband who sees it as a low status job, it is the residents' committee which has the tricky task of deciding between them - and further complications develop, not forgetting the teenagers' activities.
Over the months conflicts emerge, aspirations are thwarted or achieved, love affairs develop, and, as seasons progress, their perceptions of one another alter fundamentally. A poignant novel which tackles with skill and colour the painful subject of redundancy both at work and in relationships.
Hazel Hucker was a teacher, magistrate and much travelled army wife who is now writing full time. She is the author of several novels for Little Brown including, most recently, THE REAL CLAUDIA CHARLES. She lives in Richmond, London.
A sympathetic, clever look at a universal modern theme
- redundancy.
