Perspectives on 65 years of Dutch-Canadian relations
May 2010 marks the 65'''anniversary of the liberation of the Netherlands by Canadian troops of the Allied Forces at the end of World War II in 1944-45. This volume commemorates that historic event and celebrates the many ties and relations that have developed between the two countries and their citizens in the years since. Part I presents a selection of photographs and images tracing these ties, from the liberation, through post-war Dutch emigration to Canada, to present-day cultural, artistic, academic, and athletic events of mutual interest and enjoyment, as recent as the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. Part II comprises ten lively interviews with Dutch and Canadian individuals on their memories, experiences, and connections to Canada and the Netherlands. -In Part III, essays by ten current students and recent graduates provide a remarkable crossnational Dutch-Canadian snapshot of the next generation's reflection on some of the most compelling issues facing them and their children, such as the threat of climate change, the challenges of cultural difference, and the debates over human rights. Together, the images, memories, reflections, and observations collected in this volume aim to contribute to the strengthening and deepening of Dutch-Canadian relations in the future, as they commemorate and celebrate today the liberation of the Netherlands 65 years ago.
