The original city of Delhi was founded in the first century BC, when Raja Dhilu, a king of the Mauryan dynasty, built a city near the present site of the Qutb Minar and named it for himself. Since that time Delhi's history has been both glorious and turbulent. The site of the city has been often abandoned and a succession of new cities built, and it has passed through the hands of many rulers of different races and faiths.
Two cities exist in one today - oriential Old Delhi, where the Indo-Islamic architecture of temples and mosques, the narrow streets and crowded markets have grown up over centuries: and New Delhi, built this century by the British in western style to symbolise and house the authority of their Empire, now the ultramodern and expanding centre of Indian government.
To the southeast of Delhi lies the much younger, medieval city of Agra, founded in 1566 during the Moghul rule of India. In Agra stands the Taj Mahal, perhaps the best-known of India's architectural treasures, which, together with the mosques and citadels of both cities, provides some stunning and evocative material for the camera.
