Journey into Mystery (1st Series) Volume 1: Fear Itself

Journey Into Mystery began back in 1952, published under the old Atlas Comics label. Its contents were a mixed bag of monster and fantasy stories. The monsters and fantasy stories continued when Marvel put its name on the series in 1961’s issue #69. Then, a little over a year later Marvel struck gold when it introduced The Mighty Thor in issue #83. This Norse god and future Avenger would prove so popular that JITM would change its name to Thor with issue #126.

Jack Kirby contributed many of the later stories in this run, as well as working with Stan Lee to create Thor. Kirby was the perfect choice to illustrate Thor’s fantastic world of gods, monsters, and awe-inspiring sights such as Asgard, home of the Norse gods, and the Rainbow Bridge that spans the space between Asgard and Earth.
