Het zonnestelsel wordt getroffen door een reeks mysterieuze en krachtige stroomstoten. De situatie is een bedreiging voor de mens en dus besluit de U.S. Space Command (SpaceCom) om majoor Roy McBride op pad te sturen om het mysterie te onderzoeken. McBride, zoon van de gerenommeerde astronaut H. Clifford McBride, krijgt van SpaceCom te horen dat de stroomstoten te maken hebben met het Lima-project. Het Lima-project bestond uit een groep astronauten die aan de grenzen van het zonnestelsel speurden naar een teken van buitenaards intelligent leven. Het project werd geleid door zijn vader Clifford, die met zijn ruimteschip de planeet Neptunus bereikte, maar nadien zestien jaar lang niets meer van zich liet horen. Roy, die te horen krijgt dat zijn vader mogelijk nog leeft, aanvaardt de missie van SpaceCom en is bereid om naar de planeet Mars te reizen om er contact te leggen met zijn vader.
Roy reist eerst met een commerciële ruimtevlucht naar de Maan. Tijdens zijn reis krijgt hij het gezelschap van kolonel Pruitt, een oud-collega van zijn vader. De twee worden door Amerikaanse militairen geëscorteerd naar de basis van SpaceCom, die zich bevindt aan de achterzijde van de Maan. Om de basis te bereiken rijden ze met ruimtevoertuigen over het Maanoppervlak. Tijdens hun tocht worden ze belaagd door een groep piraten. Een deel van de escort wordt uitgeschakeld. Roy en Pruitt weten te overleven, maar niet zonder kleerscheuren. Pruitt kan zijn reis niet voortzetten.
Roy vertrekt met het ruimteschip Cepheus naar Mars. De bemanning van het schip ontvangt onderweg een noodsignaal van Vesta IX, een Noors ruimtestation dat aan biomedisch onderzoek doet. Roy wil niet op het noodsignaal reageren, maar legt zich uiteindelijk neer bij de eis van de Cepheus-leiding om het station toch te hulp te snellen. Roy en Tanner, de kapitein van de Cepheus, betreden het ruimtestation, waar het lijkt alsof er geen bemanning aan boord is. Ze splitsen zich op, waarna Roy ontdekt dat Tanner werd gedood door een ontsnapte baviaan die in het ruimtestation gebruikt werd om experimenten op uit te voeren. Roy weet de baviaan af te zonderen en te doden, waarna hij met het lijk van de kapitein terugkeert naar de Cepheus. Roy blijft rustig en schijnbaar apathisch onder de omstandigheden, maar in een psychologische evaluatie geeft hij toe woede te voelen.
Een nieuwe, mysterieuze stroomstoot zorgt ervoor dat de Cepheus enkel handmatig kan landen op Mars. Stanford, de interim-kapitein van het schip, bezwijkt onder de druk, waarna Roy de leiding over het schip overneemt en de Cepheus veilig laat landen. Op Mars wordt Roy naar een ondergrondse basis van SpaceCom geleid. Daar ontmoet hij directeur Helen Lantos en begint hij met het opnemen van audioboodschappen voor zijn vader. Tijdens een van de opnames wijkt Roy van het SpaceCom-script af en spreekt hij een emotionele boodschap in. Even later krijgt hij te horen dat hij door zijn persoonlijke betrokkenheid een gevaar vormt voor zichzelf en de missie. Roy beseft dat hij buitenspel gezet wordt door SpaceCom en leidt uit de lichaamstaal van de SpaceCom-medewerkers terecht af dat zijn vader gereageerd heeft op zijn emotionele boodschap.
Roy wordt door SpaceCom vervolgens afgezonderd in een kamer. Daar krijgt hij bezoek van Helen Lantos. Ze vertelt dat ze op Mars geboren is en dat ook haar ouders deel uitmaakten van het Lima-project. Vervolgens legt ze uit dat Roy's vader de bemanningsleden van het Lima-project vermoord heeft omdat ze muiterij pleegden en wilden terugkeren naar de Aarde. Ze onthult ook dat de bemanning van de Cepheus zonder hem zal vertrekken met als doel het Lima-project volledig te vernietigen via een nucleaire aanval. Roy wil zelf de confrontatie met zijn vader aangaan en krijgt hulp van Helen om stiekem aan boord te geraken van de Cepheus. Roy betreedt het ruimteschip, maar de bemanning krijgt meteen de opdracht om hem uit te schakelen. Het komt tot een gevecht waarbij alle bemanningsleden om het leven komen. Roy reist vervolgens in zijn eentje naar Neptunus. Tijdens zijn lange en mentaal zware tocht blikt Roy terug op zijn relatie met zijn vader en zijn echtgenote Eve, van wie hij al een tijdje vervreemd is.
Na enkele eenzame weken in de ruimte arriveert Roy in de buurt van het ruimteschip van zijn vader. Hij probeert het schip te betreden via een ruimtecapsule van de Cepheus, maar slaagt er niet in om de capsule met succes aan het schip te koppelen. Roy betreedt het schip vervolgens via een andere weg, terwijl zijn capsule wegdrijft in de ruimte.
In het schip vindt Roy de lichamen van de overleden bemanning terug. Alvorens zijn vader te confronteren, installeert hij de nucleaire bom die hij bij zich heeft. Hij ontdekt ook dat de mysterieuze stroomstoten afkomstig zijn van de antimaterie-krachtbron van het schip. De krachtbron werd beschadigd tijdens de muiterij van de bemanning. Na de muiterij besloot Clifford om de missie in zijn eentje voort te zetten, want hij weigerde de hoop op buitenaards intelligent leven op te geven.
Roy wil Clifford terug naar de Aarde brengen. Alvorens ze het schip verlaten, activeert Roy de nucleaire bom. Aan de buitenzijde van het schip begint Clifford zich plots te verzetten. Hij trekt aan het koord waarmee hun ruimtepakken aan elkaar bevestigd zijn, waardoor ze beiden van het schip wegdrijven in de ruimte. De twee worstelen met elkaar, waarna Clifford smeekt om hem achter te laten. Met tegenzin maakt Roy het koord los en ziet hij hoe zijn vader wegdrijft in het oneindige. Nadien weet Roy zich terug naar het schip van zijn vader te begeven. Daar maakt hij aan de buitenzijde een plaat los die hij vervolgens gebruikt om zich te beschermen terwijl hij door de planetaire ring van Neptunus zweeft richting de Cepheus. Vervolgens gebruikt hij de explosie van de nucleaire bom om de Cepheus te lanceren richting de Aarde.
De informatie die tijdens het Lima-project verworven werd, impliceert dat de mensheid het enige intelligente leven is in het universum. Dit inspireert Roy om de band met zijn echtgenote Eve opnieuw te versterken.

In mei 2013 raakte bekend dat James Gray een sciencefictionthriller zou schrijven en regisseren voor het in Brazilië gevestigde productiebedrijf RT Features en werd Ethan Gross aangekondigd als coscenarist.[3] In de daaropvolgende maanden omschreef de regisseur het project als "mythisch" en "zeer Campbelliaans".[4] Daarnaast vergeleek hij het verhaal met Heart of Darkness en beweerde hij geïnspireerd te zijn door het verhaal dat NASA op zoek was naar mensen die emotioneel onderontwikkeld waren voor een ruimtereis naar Mars.[5] In 2014 onthulde Gray dat hij een eerste versie van het script geschreven had onder de titel Ad Astra

In februari 2017 stelde Paramount Pictures de sequel van World War Z uit, waardoor hoofdrolspeler Brad Pitt de kans kreeg om aan andere filmprojecten mee te werken. De acteur werd vervolgens aan Ad Astra gelinkt.[7] In april 2017 bevestigde Gray dat Pitt de hoofdrol zou vertolken in zijn sciencefictionfilm.[8] Gray had de acteur eerder al proberen te strikken voor The Lost City of Z (2016) en The Gray Man, een project dat uiteindelijk niet verfilmd werd.[9]
In juni 2017 werd Tommy Lee Jones gecast als de vader van Pitts hoofdpersonage.[9] Twee maanden later werd de cast uitgebreid met Ruth Negga, John Finn, Donald Sutherland en Jamie Kennedy.

De opnames gingen midden augustus 2017 van start in Santa Clarita (Californië) en eindigden begin november 2017.[13][14] Verder werd er ook gefilmd in Baker en aan Union Station in Los Angeles.[15][16]
De achtervolging met ruimtevoertuigen op de Maan werd gefilmd in Death Valley. Achteraf werd het woestijnlandschap van de vallei met digitale animatie omgevormd tot een maanlandschap.

Ad Astra is a 2019 science fiction film produced, co-written, and directed by James Gray. Starring Brad Pitt (who also produced), Tommy Lee Jones, Ruth Negga, Liv Tyler, and Donald Sutherland, it follows an astronaut who ventures into space in search of his lost father, whose obsessive quest to discover intelligent alien life at all costs threatens the Solar System and all life on Earth.

The project was announced in early 2016, with Gray saying he wanted to feature "the most realistic depiction of space travel that's been put in a movie". Pitt signed on to star in April 2017 and the rest of the cast joined later that year. Filming began around Los Angeles that August, lasting through October.
Ad Astra premiered at the Venice Film Festival on August 29, 2019, and was theatrically released in the United States on September 20, 2019, by 20th Century Fox.[1][5] It received positive reviews from critics, with particular praise for Pitt's performance,[6] It grossed $135 million worldwide against an $80–100 million budget. In the early 22nd century, mysterious cosmic ray-bursts emanating from Neptune cause power-surges which threaten to destroy all life in the Solar System. Major Roy McBride is informed that the surge is antimatter in origin and may be connected to the "Lima Project", a space station in orbit around Neptune, sent twenty-nine years earlier to search for intelligent life and fuelled by antimatter. Roy's father, Clifford McBride, was the project's leader, a man considered a hero in SpaceCom history. Contact was lost sixteen years into its mission. Roy agrees to travel to Mars to use the last active long range communications station unaffected by the bursts in an effort to contact Clifford aboard the "Lima."
At the Moon SpaceCom base, Roy is told in secret by Colonel Pruitt that should he fail to make contact with the "Lima Project", the station will have to be destroyed. Roy obtains passage to Mars on the SpaceCom cruiser Cepheus.
On the way to Mars the Cepheus attend a distress call from a research station. During the investigation the captain is killed, the ship continues to Mars but is hit by a surge as it attempts to land. Roy assumes command from the overwhelmed (now in charge) first officer and calmly lands the ship. After securing himself in the underground SpaceCom complex, Roy begins recording officially pre-written voice messages and transmitting them to the Lima Project in hopes that Clifford will respond. After an attempt, Roy ignores the official message and sends a personal message to his father, in the hope he will see him one day. Roy is then told he will be returning to Earth, his 'personal connection' making him unsuitable for further service.
Roy is visited by facility director Helen Lantos, who reveals that her parents were Lima Project team members. She shows him classified footage revealing that Clifford's team mutinied and attempted to return to Earth, causing him to shut off their life-support systems; her parents were among those killed and that the 'hero' story was created to hide the truth. She also admits that the Cepheus is carrying a nuclear weapon and has now been requisitioned for a secret 'seek and destroy' mission without Roy. Roy decides that he should deal with his father. Lantos facilitates Roy getting to the party's rocket as it prepares to depart.
Roy climbs aboard as the rocket takes off and is immediately discovered by the crew, who are unintentionally killed in the confrontation. During the 79-day journey to Neptune, a solitary Roy reflects on his relationship with his father and with his estranged wife, Eve. He finally arrives at the station and plants the nuclear bomb before encountering Clifford, the sole survivor of the Lima Project. Clifford explains that the surges are coming from an antimatter meltdown caused by the mutiny. He also admits to Roy that he never really cared about his family and does not consider Earth his home.
Roy copies data gathered about numerous planets by the Lima Project team and persuades Clifford to accompany him back to Earth. He arms the bomb and they climb out on the station's outer hull to return to the Cepheus. Clifford suddenly launches them into space using his spacesuit's thrusters. The old man pleads for Roy to untether and leave him; Roy reluctantly does so and watches his father drift away into space. He propels himself back to the Cepheus using his own spacesuit. Roy sends a message back to SpaceCom to ensure that if his return journey should fail that SpaceCom makes all effort to retrieve the data from the Lima Project he has recovered. Roy uses the shock wave from the nuclear explosion from the station as his primary propellent to propel the Cepheus back towards Earth.
The data retrieved from the Lima Project base found no other life in the knowable universe, yet it contains a treasure trove of information on many 'magnificent' worlds. Roy is entranced by their beauty and wonder, something that was lost on his father. He returns to Earth with a newfound optimism he was previously lacking, meeting with his estranged wife again

Director James Gray first confirmed his plans to write and direct Ad Astra on May 12, 2016, during the 2016 Cannes Film Festival.[7] In April 2017, while promoting The Lost City of Z, Gray compared the story of Ad Astra to Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness. Gray also mentioned that he intended for the film to feature "the most realistic depiction of space travel that's been put in a movie and to basically say, 'Space is awfully hostile to us'". Gray also confirmed that filming for Ad Astra would commence on July 17, 2017.[8]
Casting

On April 10, 2017, Gray confirmed that Brad Pitt would star in Ad Astra.[8] In June, Tommy Lee Jones joined the cast to portray Pitt's lost father.[9] In August, Ruth Negga, John Finn, and Donald Sutherland joined the cast.[10][11][12]
Filming

Principal photography on the film began in mid-August 2017 in Santa Clarita, California, lasting 60 days.[13][14][15] Following poor initial test screenings, reshoots were conducted (although Pitt was unavailable), increasing the production budget from $80 million to over $100 million.[3] Charlie Kaufman provided an uncredited rewrite of the voice-over dialogue in the film.[16] Gray did not have control over the film's final cut, which he told The Hollywood Reporter was "as painful a thing as I have experienced outside the death of a loved one."[17]
The visual effects were by Moving Picture Company, Method Studios, Mr. X, Weta Digital, Brainstorm Digital, and Capital T, and supervised by Allen Maris, Christopher Downs, Guillaume Rocheron, Ryan Tudhope, Aidan Fraser, Olaf Wendt, Anders Langlands, Eran Dinur, Jamie Hallett, and Territory Studio.[18] Max Richter composed the film's score and recorded it at AIR Studios in London. Additionally, Lorne Balfe was asked to write additional music for the score. The orchestra and choir were then recorded at Synchron Stage Vienna.[19][20] James Gray consulted with experimental film scholars Gregory Zinman and Leo Goldsmith for inspiration on the visuals.
