Kingsman: The Secret Service is a 2014 spy action comedy film directed by Matthew Vaughn.[2][7] It is the first in the Kingsman film series and is also based on the comic book series of the same name, written by Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons, published by Millarworld and based on a concept by Millar and Vaughn.[1]
The film follows Gary "Eggsy" Unwin's (Taron Egerton) recruitment by Harry Hart (Colin Firth) into Kingsman, a secret spy organisation. Eggsy joins a mission, in brutal and comedic fashion, to tackle a global threat from Richmond Valentine (Samuel L. Jackson), a wealthy megalomaniac and eco-terrorist wanting to deal with climate change by wiping out most of humanity. Mark Strong and Michael Caine play supporting roles.
Kingsman: The Secret Service premiered at the Butt-Numb-A-Thon festival on 13 December 2014, and was theatrically released in the United Kingdom on 29 January 2015 and United States on 13 February 2015, by 20th Century Fox. The film received generally positive reviews from critics with praise for its stylised action sequences, direction, acting, antagonist, visual style, musical score and humour, although some scenes were criticised for being over-the-top.[8] The film grossed over $414 million worldwide, becoming Vaughn's most commercially successful film to date.[9] In 2015, the film won the Empire Award for Best British Film.
A sequel titled Kingsman: The Golden Circle was released in September 2017, while a prequel titled The King's Man was theatrically released on 22 December 2021.
In 1997, Lee Unwin, a probationary secret agent, sacrifices himself in the Middle East to save his superior Harry Hart. Blaming himself for Lee's death, Harry returns to London and gives Lee's son Gary "Eggsy" Unwin a medal engraved with an emergency assistance number.
Seventeen years later, Eggsy is a rebellious chav, having dropped out of training for the Royal Marines despite his cunning and athletic talent.[12][13] Arrested for stealing a car that belongs to a friend of his abusive stepfather, Dean, Eggsy calls the emergency number, leading Harry to arrange his release and subdue Dean's gang as well as saving Eggsy from his stepfather's furious wrath back at home.
Harry explains that he is a member of Kingsman, a private intelligence service founded by the British elite, who lost their heirs in the First World War and put their money toward protecting the world. The organisation is named for the tailor shop in Savile Row used as a front for their operations. Codenamed "Galahad", Harry nominates Eggsy to replace agent "Lancelot", who was killed by the assassin Gazelle while trying to rescue radical climate change scientist Prof. James Arnold from kidnappers. Kingsman's technical support operative "Merlin" discovers Arnold working as though nothing has happened.
Harry attempts to interrogate Arnold at Imperial College London, but a microchip in Arnold's neck explodes, killing him and putting Harry in a coma. The detonation signal is traced to Gazelle's employer Richmond Valentine, a billionaire philanthropist who has offered everyone in the world SIM cards with free cellular and Internet access. Harry, after recovering from his coma, poses as another philanthropist to meet Valentine.
Eggsy befriends fellow Kingsman trainee Roxy, while the elite other boys make fun of him. He endures Merlin's tests until they are the only candidates left. However, Eggsy fails his final test by refusing to shoot a puppy he was given to raise; Roxy is named the new "Lancelot" when she shoots her gun. Harry learns of Valentine's connection to a religious hate group and travels to their church in Kentucky, wearing glasses containing a video transceiver. As Eggsy watches Harry's footage, Valentine triggers the SIM cards inside the church with a signal that causes the parishioners and Harry to become murderously violent. Harry is the only survivor but is shot in the face outside the church by Valentine.
Eggsy returns to Kingsman headquarters and notices Chester King, codename "Arthur" and Kingsman's leader, has the same implantation scar on his neck as Arnold. King reveals Valentine's plan to transmit his violence-inducing signal worldwide, "culling" most of humanity to avert its extinction from global warming. Valentine has recruited various world leaders and wealthy elite to his cause, implanted with chips to protect them from the signal; those who refuse are held captive at his bunker, including Crown Princess Tilde of Sweden. King poisons Eggsy's drink, but Eggsy switches glasses while distracting him, letting King poison himself instead, and extracts the chip from King's neck.
Eggsy, Merlin, and Roxy locate Valentine's bunker, where many of his conspirators are gathered. Roxy pilots high-altitude balloons to break up Valentine's satellite network, but he secures a replacement. Merlin flies to the bunker, where Eggsy masquerades as King, but is discovered by failed Kingsman recruit Charlie Hesketh.
Cornered by Valentine's men, Merlin activates the implanted chips' failsafe, killing the guards and conspirators as heads explode around the world. Valentine activates the signal, triggering worldwide pandemonium. Eggsy kills Gazelle and impales Valentine with one of Gazelle's sharpened prosthetic blades, stopping the signal.
In a mid-credits scene, Eggsy, now the new "Galahad", offers his mother and baby half-sister a new home and prepares to take on Dean and his gang, just as Harry once did.
Development
edit
The project originated when Mark Millar and Matthew Vaughn were at a bar discussing spy movies,[1] lamenting that the genre had become too serious over the years and deciding to do "a fun one."[15] To have the time to make the film, Vaughn had to opt out of directing X-Men: Days of Future Past, which he called "a really tough decision".[15] He reasoned that if he did not do it, "somebody else ... [would] wake up and do a fun spy movie. Then I would have written a bloody screenplay that no one would want to make."[15]
After studying the ends of old Bond movies, Vaughn found many innuendos that "always come from the men". This inspired him to include a scene at the end where Princess Tilde has anal sex with Eggsy for saving her. The scenes caused Vaughn to be accused of misogyny. An alternative version with the scene and an earlier reference to it removed was prepared.[8]
Casting
edit
Colin Firth joined the cast to lead the film on 29 April 2013.[16] It was initially reported in 2013 that Leonardo DiCaprio was in talks to play a villain,[17] although Vaughn himself later denied that he was ever considered, stating that he came as close to playing the role "as I am to becoming the Pope."[18] Instead the role of the villain went to Samuel L. Jackson. Jackson took the role in part because of a career-long dream to be in a James Bond movie. As he felt that this was unlikely to come true, he took on the role, stating "I felt like this was an opportunity to play a really great Bond villain."[19] Jackson's character has a notable lisp, which was partially inspired by the stutter he had during his childhood.[19] In September 2013, Vaughn cast Sophie Cookson for the female lead, preferring a newcomer over more obvious candidates like Emma Watson and Bella Heathcote.[20] Mark Hamill was cast as Professor James Arnold, a character named after the comic book's antagonist but whose role in the narrative replaces what in the comic book was a fictionalised version of Hamill himself.[21]
Filming
edit
Principal photography began 6 October 2013 in Deepcut, Surrey,[22][23] on a budget reported to be one-third of the $200 million budget of Skyfall.[24] The Alexandra Road Estate in Camden[25] was used for Eggsy's home area, and some scenes were filmed at Imperial College London. The Black Prince Pub in Kennington, South London, was used for various fight scenes and the car chase. Savile Row in Mayfair was also employed as a location and the exterior of tailors Huntsman at No. 11, which provided the clothes, and James Lock & Co. in St James's, which provided the hats.[26]
To achieve the desired effect of "all of the bad guys' heads [exploding] in a Busby Berkeley firework display", Vaughn visited three effects studios; the first two were too gory while Vaughn wanted something surreal that people could enjoy. Finally, they found an effect akin to colored smoke from the third effects house.[8]
Kingsman: The Golden Circle is a 2017 British spy action comedy film directed by Matthew Vaughn and written by Jane Goldman and Vaughn. Based on the Millarworld comic book series The Secret Service (later retitled Kingsman) by Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons, in turn based on a concept by Millar and Vaughn, the film is the sequel to Kingsman: The Secret Service (2014) and the second instalment in the Kingsman film series. The film features an ensemble cast consisting of Colin Firth, Taron Egerton, Mark Strong, Sophie Cookson, Edward Holcroft, and Hanna Alström, who reprise their roles from the first film, with Julianne Moore, Halle Berry, Pedro Pascal, Elton John, Channing Tatum, and Jeff Bridges joining the cast. The film follows members of Kingsman needing to team up with their American counterpart, Statesman, after the Kingsman organization is crippled and the world is held hostage by Poppy Adams and her drug cartel, "The Golden Circle."
Kingsman: The Golden Circle premiered in London on 18 September 2017 and was theatrically released in the United Kingdom on 20 September 2017. It grossed $410 million worldwide against a budget of $104 million and received mixed reviews from critics.
A prequel, The King's Man, was released on 22 December 2021, while a crossover film, Argylle, was released on 1 February 2024.
A year after defeating Richmond Valentine,[a] Gary "Eggsy" Unwin has officially joined the Kingsman intelligence service, taking his late mentor Harry Hart's title of "Galahad", and begun a relationship with Tilde, Crown Princess of Sweden. He is ambushed by Charlie Hesketh, a former Kingsman trainee who lost his arm and vocal cords during the Valentine incident, replacing them with cybernetics.
Eggsy evades Charlie and his henchmen in a car chase across London, but Charlie's severed cybernetic arm hacks into the Kingsman database through Eggsy's car. Charlie passes the information to Poppy Adams – leader of the world's largest drug cartel, the Golden Circle – who launches missiles to destroy the Kingsman headquarters and wipe out all its agents in Britain.
Eggsy and Merlin survived the attack, and Kingsman's emergency protocol leads them to Statesman, an American private intelligence service posing as a Bourbon whiskey distillery in Kentucky, which also serves as Kingsman's American counterpart. There, they discover that Harry survived his shooting thanks to Statesman's nanotechnology but is suffering from amnesia.
They also learn about the Golden Circle from Statesman leader Champagne, and the two agencies decide to collaborate to take down the cartel. Statesman agent Tequila develops a blue rash and exhibits signs of mania, resulting in his replacement by agent Whiskey as Eggsy's partner, while Merlin and Statesman Ginger Ale assist in curing Harry's amnesia. Eggsy implants a tracking device on Charlie's ex-girlfriend Clara during a sexual encounter at the Glastonbury Festival, but his disclosure of the mission to Tilde puts a strain on their relationship.
Eggsy cures Harry's amnesia by threatening to shoot a Cairn Terrier puppy that resembles Harry's late dog, shortly before Poppy broadcasts a message to the world about a toxin she has secretly added to all her drugs, which causes users to develop mania symptoms before paralysis and then, death. She offers the antidote if the U.S. President ends his country's war on drugs and grants her cartel legal immunity. The President – who is revealed to be corrupt – decides to quarantine everyone affected, intending to let them all die to put Poppy out of business and rid the world of drug users.
Eggsy, Harry, and Whiskey track Clara to the Golden Circle's antidote factory in the mountains of Italy. Eggsy steals an antidote sample, but it is broken by Whiskey during an ambush by the Golden Circle's henchmen, leading Harry to suspect him of working against them. Harry shoots Whiskey, but Eggsy, believing Harry to be delusional due to his recovery, saves him with nanotechnology.
Simultaneously, Charlie destroys the antidote factory, killing Clara for unwittingly betraying the Golden Circle. Tilde calls Eggsy, revealing she has been affected by the blue rash after taking drugs due to her stress over Eggsy's infidelity. Eggsy, Harry, and Merlin discover the location of Poppy's hideout, "Poppy Land", in Cambodia and fly there to steal the laptop that can deploy drones carrying the antidote.
Arriving at Poppy Land, Eggsy steps on a land mine before Merlin switches places with him, sacrificing himself instead. Storming the lair, Eggsy kills Charlie while Harry destroys Poppy's robotic attack dogs with the help of Elton John, who had been kidnapped by Poppy. They secure the laptop and inject Poppy with a concentrated dose of her own toxin-infused heroin. Poppy gives them the laptop password in a drugged state before she dies from an overdose.
Whiskey interrupts them before they can deploy the drones, revealing that he wants all drug users to die after his pregnant wife was killed in a robbery by methamphetamine addicts. Furthermore, the elimination of all drugs will cause Statesmen's stock price to skyrocket since people will depend on alcohol, making Whiskey and his Statesmen rich. Eggsy and Harry fight and kill Whiskey by pushing him into an industrial meat grinder, then deploy the drones to release the antidote, saving the affected victims.
The President is impeached and arrested for conspiring to commit genocide against drug victims, and the Statesman purchases a distillery in Scotland to help rebuild the Kingsman. Ginger Ale is appointed to Whiskey's position; Eggsy marries Princess Tilde; and Tequila takes an exchange assignment at Kingsman, which acquires a new tailor shop in London.

Near the release of Kingsman: The Secret Service, Mark Millar and Matthew Vaughn said a sequel would be possible if the first film was to perform well at the box office, and Vaughn expressed interest in returning to direct.[5][6] Vaughn also noted that he had hoped to have Firth back in the sequel, though it was later stated that Firth would not be returning.[7][8]
On 29 April 2015, Fox announced that a sequel was in production, but that it was unclear if Vaughn would return due to his interest in directing a Flash Gordon film.[9] On 11 June 2015, Vaughn told Yahoo that he had begun writing the script for the sequel, and that he could return to direct.[10] In September 2015, Millar reiterated that the sequel was in development and that Vaughn was looking for ways to bring Firth back without sacrificing the integrity of the story. Later that month, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that Egerton had also signed on for a new Robin Hood film, which was then set to begin shooting in February 2016; Egerton's schedule was thus in conflict with the Kingsman sequel. However, in mid-October, it was confirmed that scheduling issues had been settled between both studios. Lionsgate began Robin Hood's production right after Egerton wrapped filming on Kingsman: The Golden Circle, which began in May 2016.[11]
On 17 February 2016, it was revealed that Julianne Moore was in negotiations to play the villain in the film.[12] On 10 March 2016, Halle Berry was cast in the film,[13] in a role that later turned out to be the Statesman's tech support. In late March, Vaughn confirmed Berry's and Moore's casting, as well as the title, Kingsman: The Golden Circle. On 8 April 2016, Pedro Pascal was cast in the film as Jack Daniels,[14] and on the same day, a promotional poster was released featuring Firth's character's glasses, confirming Firth's return for the film;[15] Firth's return was later officially confirmed on 11 July 2016.[16] Channing Tatum confirmed his casting through his Twitter account, while Variety reported that Elton John was in talks for a role. (John would later be portrayed by co-star Egerton in 2019 movie Rocketman.)[17] In late April, Vaughn talked about writing the sequel, and stated "writing this was the hardest thing I've ever done."[18] Jeff Bridges was added to the cast on 28 May 2016.[19] Vinnie Jones announced on Twitter that he had been cast, though he did not appear in the finished film.[20]
