In oktober 1960 produceerden de productieve sessies van John Coltrane voor zijn Atlantic-album "My Favorite Things" genoeg materiaal voor drie albums. Een van deze albums was "Coltrane Plays the Blues", uitgebracht in 1961, waarop de jazzmuzikant voor het eerst sopraansaxofoon speelde. Het album bevat ook McCoy Tyner, Steve Davis en Elvin Jones, die onder andere 'Blues to Bechet', 'Blues to Elvin' en 'Blues to You' opnamen
