1. The Vigil.
Chick Corea may have formed a new band, but still has ghosts from the Return to Forever reunion on his mind.

Corea's international ensemble includes drummer Marcus Gilmore, French bassist Hadrien Feraud, Britain's Tim Garland on reeds and winds, and guitarist Charles Altura.

Guest appearances by singer-extraordinaire—and wife & soulmate of the leader—Gayle Moran Corea, percussionist and groove specialist Pernell Saturnino, plus long-time musical collaborator and legend Stanley Clarke on bass and the great Ravi Coltrane on saxophone.

While this is an electric band, it's not just a fusion group. The seven tunes on the album (five are over ten minutes) reflect some of Corea's richest writing and arranging in years.

Corea's solos engage and complement each player, while remaining the centerpiece.

The colors, textures, and expansive rhythmic palette that surround him eventually create a maze-like melody that inserts itself into individual solos.

As a band, the Vigil is exciting as much for its potential as for the multifaceted talent the group members put on display here.

2. Antidote.
Antidote is a studio album by Chick Corea and The Spanish Heart Band.The album received a Grammy Award for Best Jazz Latin Album at the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards.

There's no shortage of compositions or albums by Chick Corea that reflect his love of Spanish music in particular and latin music in general

Revisiting material from My Spanish Heart (the title-track and ‘Armando's Rhumba’) and 1982's Touchstone (‘Duende’ and ‘Yellow Nimbus’), Corea also includes Stravinsky's ‘Pas De Deux’, ‘Zyryab’ by Paco de Lucia, ‘Desifinado’ by Antonio Carlos Jobim and two new originals – ‘Antidote’ and ‘Admiration’.

There's a heavenly hosts intro from Gayle Moran's multi-tracked vocal on the intro of ‘My Spanish Heart’; a percussion dialogue between Quintero and the tap of Nino de los Rays; Spanish into Middle-Eastern influences on ‘Zyryab’; the alluring Brazilian samba/bossa influences on ‘Desifinado’ plus, a clever segue between Stravinsky's ‘Pas de Deux’ and Corea's ‘Admiration’ to round out proceedings.

And this all hangs together thanks to Corea's creative imprimatur.
