In june of 1961, the embryonic beatles - john lennon, george harrison, paul mccartney, and original drummer pete best - bassist stuart sutcliffe had left - met at a polydor records recording studio in hamburg for their first professional sessions with producer bert kaempfert.



They backed singer tony sheridan on five songs (;my bonnie,; the saints;, ;why; ;take out some insurance on me, baby, and ;nobody;s child,; which was later covered by the traveling wilburys), and recorded two additional numbers on their own (;ain;t she sweet,; with a john lennon lead vocal, and cry for a shadow," an instrumental by the one-time-only songwriting team of lennon and harrison). A year later, in may 1962, to fulfill their contract with bert kaempfert produktion, they recorded backing tracks for two more songs (sweet georgia brown; was released later, but the ;swanee river; tape was lost, and has never been found).



These recordings have been rereleased constantly on polydor and other labels through the years, on singles, eps, lps, and cds, mostly in conjunction with other tony sheridan recordings or with tracks by other artists. They have also been a staple of various british invasion compilations. In 2001, the german collector;s label bear family released the definitive collection of these recordings, called beatles bop - hamburg days. It contained all the known mono and stereo versions, medley edits, and u.s. Overdubs of these songs - 38 tracks on two cds. This collection can be found on this site here , here , here , and here . It is not out of print, contrary to erroneous information on wikipedia. Two thousand eleven marks the 50th anniversary of these recordings. Universal music and time-life entertainment have put together the first complete north american release of these recordings.



The content of this new set is identical to the bear family version, except that bear family added four edits (mono and stereo, intro and no intro) of tony sheridans 1961 solo version of ;swanee river" (from the my bonnie lp), to make up for the lost beatles/sheridan version. But that was not a beatles-backed recording, so it;s no big loss. Time-life and universal have also resequenced the tracks on both cds into a more listenable running order, so that you don;t have to listen to three versions of ;my bonnie" in a row, for example. While it doesn;t have the deluxe hardcover book included with the bear family box set, the sound quality is just as good. The contents of the booklet are an abbreviated version of the bear family liner notes, re-edited for a north american audience.
