Na zijn tijd bij George Duke en Frank Zappa's Mothers Of Invention was de violist uit Avranches, Frankrijk nog steeds lid van John McLaughlin's Mahavishnu Orchestra toen hij begin 1975 een van de meest creatieve fases van zijn carrière inluidde met zijn Atlantic debuut "Upon The Wings Of Music" en de opvolger "Aurora", die in hetzelfde jaar verscheen. Er volgden nog drie albums tot 1978, waarop de explosieve kant van fusion vaak werd afgezet tegen een meer lyrische, zogenaamd "Europese" interpretatie. Verfijnde composities, die in het titelnummer van "Imaginary Voyage" bijvoorbeeld soms konden uitmonden in een vierdelige suite van 20 minuten, stonden geïnspireerde improvisatie en energiek samenspel niet in de weg. Country referenties ("New Country") hadden hun plaats, net als funk excursies ("The Art Of Happiness"). Ponty kon in alle muzikale situaties terugvallen op zijn vaste waarden Darryl Stuermer (gitaar), Patrice Rushen (toetsen) en Tom Fowler (bas), aangevuld met afwisselende topdrummers als Ndugu en Steve Smith. De Fransman bewees ook een pionier te zijn van de elektrische viool met een vijfsnarig instrument met een lage C-snaar en schuwde analoge studio-effecten niet - bijvoorbeeld op "Cosmic Messenger". Met deze vijf albums werd Jean-Luc Ponty uiteindelijk de belangrijkste en invloedrijkste jazzviolist naast Stéphane Grappelli.
