It is not without reason that Jack MacManus called one of his songs Bang On The Piano. Because he has been playing the keyboard nicely since his earliest childhood. The music was brought to the young McManus as the son of a technician at major rock concerts. With a sound that lies somewhere between Maroon 5 and Ben Folds, he delivers a well-groomed debut. The euphoric feeling that a good pop chorus can evoke in the café at closing time, that is what McManus says he is all about. A noble endeavor, in which he unfortunately relies too much on proven production techniques and hit formulas. The element of surprise that distinguishes good pop from mediocre pop is sorely missed. McManus has therefore not managed to create a truly unique sound, Either Side Of Midnight does offer an hour of enjoyable traditional pop rock.
