Mastering by EMI is really nice on this 3CD collection (as it was on the Part 1 set). Mike Batt's production on "Rocket Cottage" from 1976 has an airy, spacious quality that was absent on the UK vinyl pressing Steeleye Span - Rocket Cottage, where it always sounded a bit claustrophobic to me - like I'd been locked in a broom cupboard with Nigel Pegrum's drumkit!
On the other hand, 1977's "Storm Force Ten" still sounds hugely constrained and muffled - as if all the treble had been stolen by punk rock. The vocals are beautifully recorded (listen to, for example, "Sweep Chimney Sweep") but the drums sound like they were being played under a duvet.
Towards the end of this set of 3 CDs there is a certain ho-hum quality to the songs (from "Tempted And Tried" especially) although the remastering is superb.
The bonus tracks (Boar's Head Carol and Rag Doll) are welcome, as they were only available on 'niche' compilations or the original 1970s vinyl singles before this compilation was issued.

- enrico_94 May 20, 2021Edited 3 years agoAlthough many see the 5 albums contained on this set as the waning of Steeleye Span Mk 2's career in both commercial and cultural terms, there are many fantastic songs here - plus, let's be honest, a few that try the patience slightly. Still worth seeking out for Steeleye completists and those who missed the albums the first time around. In general these remastered recordings are clearer and an improvement on the Park Records re-issues of the individual albums.
