The new Clapton takes some getting used to. With the delicious albums Unpluggeden From The Cradle still fresh in the memory, the softer sounds of Pilgrim come as a cold shower. The album shows a somewhat timid Clapton, who, together with producer Simon Climie, has opted for an R&B-like approach to the predominantly quiet songs. With the exception of a single song, he succeeded quite well, partly due to the power of Clapton's voice and sober but accurate guitar playing and the Hammond organ contributions of Paul Carrack. The best songs from this really nice album are Pilgrim, Circus, Going Down Slow and Inside Of Me.
