Beschrijving

Celebrated as the 'Rembrandt of video art', Bill Viola was the first contemporary artist to be honored with a solo exhibition at the prestigious National Gallery (London, October 2003). The documentary The Eye of the Heart is the first portrait of this important artist. Viola began exploring video art in the early 1970s and is increasingly seen as one of the most important visual artists working today. Single works alternate with large-scale sound and image installations. Since 1972, Viola has created enthusiastically received architectural installations, sound environments, video works, electronic music performances and works for television. His provocative works focus on universal human experiences and are inspired by both Western and Eastern art and religious and mystical traditions. Bill Viola: The Eye of the Heart shows the artist himself at work, rare footage from his own archive and in-depth interviews with Viola herself. Filmmaker Mark Kidel was given unique access to Bill Viola and his personal archives to make the film. Viola talks passionately about his life and the artistic influences underlying his works of art. He is very candid about the interplay between his life and his art. All this shows why Viola is one of the true pioneers of video art.
