In the early 1970s, before pornography became a mass-produced industry, there was a brief moment when the genre sought artistic legitimacy. The Devil in Miss Jones marked the most significant leap forward both commercially and creatively. Directed by Gerard Damiano following the success of Deep Throat, and inspired by Jean-Paul Sartre’s play No Exit, the film tells the story of a lonely spinster who, after committing suicide, is denied heaven and condemned to limbo. Faced with eternal nothingness, she chooses to return to earth to “earn” her place in hell by indulging in the deadly sin of lust. The film became a cultural phenomenon, ultimately ranking as the seventh highest-grossing film of 1973, and set new standards for narrative ambition, production value, and musical scoring within the genre. Composer Alden Shuman delivered a striking departure from the era’s typical wah-wah soundtracks, instead creating a sweeping, panoramic, and deeply plaintive score performed by piano and full orchestra. Never previously reissued on LP, this Real Gone release arrives pressed on limited hellfire vinyl, restricted to 900 copies — a bold and historically significant soundtrack that finally receives the presentation it deserves.
