Gundula Janowitz, Christa Ludwig, Fritz Wunderlich and Franz Crass with the Münchener Bach-Chor and Münchener Bach-Orchester, conducted by Karl Richter. Recorded in Munich's Herkulessaal, 1965. Cat. 2710 004, made in Germany, stereo.
This Richter recording is one of the most celebrated accounts of the Christmas Oratorio ever put to disc, prized above all for Fritz Wunderlich's Evangelist — recorded not long before his early death, and still held up as a benchmark performance decades on.
