Reïssue LP Arthur Verocai on Mr Bongo label from this Brazilian masterpiece/classic 1972 album
Recorded at Studio Somil, Rio De Janeiro in 1972, the album was produced, arranged, directed by the self-taught, Arthur Verocai. Previously he had worked on many records in various capacities, with artists including Jorge Ben, Ivan Lins and Celia, but this album gave him the chance to do his thing in it’s most pure form.
This masterpiece, perfect in it’s arrangement and fusion of sonics, epitomises the sound of Brazil at the time; strings, guitars, pianos, break beats, bass lines, synthesizers, vocals from the wonderful Célia, Carlos Dafe and Oberdan (Banda Black Rio), plus percussion from Pedro Santos and Paulo Moura on sax. Het is volgens velen een van de beste albums ooit gemaakt. Het 29 minuten durende meesterwerk brengt op volmaakte wijze verschillende muzikale invloeden samen en belichaamt zo het geluid van Brazilië in de zeventiger jaren, met strijkers, gitaren, piano's, breakbeats, baslijnen, synthesizers, zang, saxofoon en percussie. Bossanova, samba, jazz, MPB, psychedelica en funk sluiten moeiteloos op elkaar aan.
Het album werd opgenomen in Rio de Janeiro en geproduceerd, gearrangeerd en geregisseerd door Arthur Verocai zelf. Vele muziekgrootheden werkten er aan mee, van de geweldige zangers Célia, Carlos Dafe en Oberdan (Banda Black Rio) tot percussionist Pedro Santos en Paulo Moura op saxofoon. Het album overstijgt het genre van de Braziliaanse muziek en vond weerklank bij veel andere musici. Verocais plaat werd met regelmaat gesampeld door artiesten uit de hiphop-scene zoals onder anderen MF Doom, Ludacris & Common, Little Brother en Action Bronson, die zo bijdroegen aan zijn cultstatus.
