Paul Simon ging in de jaren 80, na het niet al te succesvolle album Hearts And Bones, op zoek naar nieuwe inspiratie - en vond deze in Zuid Afrika; een land wat op dat moment verscheurd werd door het apartheid regime. Ondanks kritieken dat hij de Westerse boycot op het Afrikaanse land zou doorbreken; deinsde Simon niet terug: en nam met talentvolle lokale muzikanten een fusie van vele stijlen op; de klassieker Graceland.
